Working from home can have many benefits, but it’s easy to become distracted and your time isn’t spent as effectively as you might wish. Here are our top 10 tips on how to be more efficient when working from home.

1. Set a Timetable

You have the report to write but the washing basket is overflowing. It’s tempting to put off the report to complete some household chores. Set a timetable to ensure you have your work hours scheduled as well chores. The washing can be hung up during your morning break.

2. Set Boundaries

If you have a separate office to the rest of the household, put a “Do Not Disturb” sign on the door to let family know when you are at work. Set boundaries with family, friends and neighbours. Let them know that they are unable to drop around for an impromptu coffee, call for a chat or rely on you to collect their deliveries.

3. Do Not Answer Personal Calls

Smartphone make this rule much easier to follow. Check who’s calling and simply do not accept any personal calls during your work hours. If it’s an emergency, they will leave a message.

4. Don’t Rely On the Kitchen

When working from home, it’s tempting to use the kitchen as a crutch. Do not eat a chocolate biscuit in the aftermath of a difficult call or to put off that report you have to write.

5. Don’t Visit Social Media

A quick check of your Facebook page can quickly become hours viewing all your social media. Unless it’s part of your job, don’t visit social media. If it’s too tempting when you access your Internet, use a different web browser for your work versus your personal use.

6. Write a To Do List

Write a complete list of everything you need to complete to ensure you don’t forget anything. You will also feel more productive when you tick off your last item when you finish your day.

7. Dress for Business

A suit may not be necessary, but get out of your pyjamas and dress accordingly.

8. Eat In the Kitchen

It’s tempting to eat at your desk, but if you eat in the kitchen you will definitely take a break from work and will fill more refreshed to tackle the afternoon.

9. Pack A Healthy Lunchbox

By preparing your lunch the evening before, you can avoid the need to “just pop out to grab some lunch” which could lead to distractions. You can also ensure you have healthy options to ensure you aren’t feeling sluggish in the afternoon.

10. Socialise

Part of the benefit of working in an office, is that you interact with other people throughout the day. When working from home, especially if you are a parent of young children, ensure you socialise with other adults in your spare time.
